Several of the keynote speakers in EADV have delivered important and inspiring speeches to rally support for important research or regulation revealing on noble ideology. This has helped EADV get the requisite traction from an international community and garner more attention from several European health regulating agencies. This can be contrived from the way that the participation in the annual Congress and the spring sessions have been increasing over time. 25th EADV Congress
The 25th EADV Congress held in Vienna, Austria in 2016, garnered much attention as a result of the critical issues touched upon by several of the keynote speakers.
1. Günther Hofbauer, Zürich (CH)
Günther’s discussion was focused on the role of inflammation as a driving element to carcinogenesis. In this context he reviewed he role played by Notch1, RAGE, and S100A8/A9. HE also pointed out the study in which low grade inflammation impacted carcinogenesis after the use of NSAIDs in non-melanoma cancer.
2. Amir S Yazdi, Tübingen (DE)
Yazdi presented an update on the pathophysiology of neutrophilic diseases. He discussed on the differences between generalized postular psoriasis (GPP) and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) while pointing out that GPP is an autoinflammatory syndrome as a result of the defects in IL-36 receptor antagonist, whereas AGEP is a disease that is arbitrated by T-cells.
3. Thomas Kündig, Zürich (CH)
With an effort towards getting improved understanding of anti-inflammatory syndromes and the potential indications for IL-1 antagonists to which these syndromes respond, Thomas’ disposition was one of the most noteworthy. Although several IL-1 antagonists have been in use to treat such conditions, he elaborated on his preference of the IL-1a antagonists.
26th EADV Congress
The 26th Congress was held in Geneva, Switzerland and touched upon several of the critical issues related to dermatology and venereology.
1. Prof David E Fisher
David presented a fascinating research on melanoma which indicated the development of melanoma in mice without exposure to UV light. He also showed data suggesting that pheomelanin is a carcinogen that does not need UV light, but whose effects can be amplified with UV light. He hypothesized that on extending several of the tests conducted on black mice to humans, it might be discovered that amelanotic melanomas contain pheomelanin. His team has also found pheomelanin in human amelanotic melanoma. This would bring in a revolution in melanoma care if confirmed by other groups. He also hypothesized the role played by creating inflammation in melanomas to generate anti-melanoma response from the body.
2. Kenji Kabashima
Kenji discussed the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis from several perspectives. He pointed out that atopic dermatitis was related to filaggrin mutations. He also discussed on the suggestion that absence of Langerhan cells diminishes atopic dermatitis.
27th EADV Congress
1. Tilo Biedermann (Munich, Germany)
With more than 200 publications to his name, Biederman is one of the most prominent scientists appearing as keynote speakers to this year’s EADV Congress. His research focuses on cutaneous immune reactions, tumor immunotherapy and allergy.
2. Christian Blank (Amsterdam, Netherlands)
Dr. Blank brought in his precious experience into this year’s EADV in an attempt to boost melanoma research and make people aware of the fascinating advances in this field. He discussed on several of the response modifiers in melanoma and other prognostic markers.
